For Michelle – The Three Day Breast Cancer Walk

Last year, I lost a dear friend to breast cancer, Michelle Brown.  She’s touched so many lives that a many of her friends have assembled a team to walk in the 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk in September: Valley Girls A Walking In Memory of Michelle".  Her widow Robert is a part of this group.

I pledged to support the team by posting a link for donations on my blog until their mission is accomplished.  The link is to help Robert raise some funds for breast cancer in memory of his wife.

I keep Michelle above my desk.  She’s on the top of my bulletin board.  If I’m having a rough day…I look up at her smiling face.  Michelle was my processor during my first five or six years at Mortgage Master.   Mortgage Master also lost another co-worker a few years back to Breast Cancer, Tammy Swanberg.  My good buddy (and fellow LO at Mortgage Master) Larry Swanberg walks in his wife’s memory.

If you are able to support either of these gentleman honoring the memories of their partners lost to breast cancer, it is greatly appreciated.

Dawn’s Army Marching Forward to The Big Climb

The troops at The Talon Group are preparing for the The Big Climb which takes place a month from today.    This troop, aka Dawn’s Army, is climbing in honor of their co-worker, Dawn, who was recently diagnosed with Leukemia.

My husband is part of Dawn’s Army and will be climbing flights of stairs in the Columbia Tower on my birthday for this great cause.   I’m doing my part by looking for folks to sponsor my husband who’s going by the alias of Gomer Pile.   Fund raising efforts support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.   Will you sponsor my Gomer?  Click here.

Friday Fun: My Encounter with Phil Smart

Last Saturday, my husband and I went to the 2008 Chinese New Year Gala Auction.  This was a benefit for cancer research at Children’s Hospital, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and UW Medicine.    It’s an amazing event which includes a Luly Yang run-way fashion show, live dancing, great food and wonderful people.

I’ve had the opportunity to see Phil Smart Sr. speak at many charitable events, including the New Teacher’s Breakfast I used to help organize when I volunteered for the Greater Renton Chamber of Commerce Community Development Committee.   He seems very genuine.   Back to my story…

The event was over and everyone was going for their coats and I noticed Phil Smart walking towards his wife and I pointed him out whispering to my friend, Julie, asking if she knew who he was.  His friend noticed I was watching and asked if we would like to meet Phil.  I was very honored to do so and to tell him how much I appreciate all he has done for our community.   He humbly replied that he’s lucky he receives all the attention he does, many others are just as charitable and do not receive the recognition.  I was thrilled.  Then when my husband and I were walking out of the Sheraton, we saw Mr. Smart and he gestured to us.  He told my husband, "I’m not a fisherman, however, she’s a keeper!"  Why yes I am!

Join Dawn’s Army and the Big Climb for Leukemia

A troop from The Talon Group will be climbing the Columbia Tower stairwells on March 16, 2008 to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

These title and escrow employees of Talon are assembling to be part of Dawn’s Army.  Dawn also works at Talon and was recently diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Dawn’s Army will be climbing a 69-flight course which features 1,311 steps, 19 steps per flight and 788 feet of vertical elevation.  Whew!

Back in my title and escrow days, I worked in the Columbia Tower on floors 17 & 18 when it was brand spankin’ new.  I never climbed the stairs!  (I have a weird phobia of stairs, but that’s probably TMI).

Since I won’t be marching with the Talon troop while they climb the tallest skyscraper in Washington…I’m going to blog about them and hopefully help them raise some funds for the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.   This is a fabulous organization and I did a half-marathon in Vancouver BC a few years ago supporting this cause.

Please consider contributing to LLS and supporting Dawn’s Army and the fine folks at Talon.   Dawn, a mother of a young son and wife, had no idea this disease was going to strike her.  Let’s do what we can to help!

To donate, click here.  Every amount helps no matter how big or small.  (Gomer Pile is my husband’s alias…when you click the donate link…you’ll understand).

I will be keeping a link in the upper left corner of Mortgage Porter for fundraising until donations have stopped.

Thank you!
