Are You Ready to be Hands Free with Your Cell Phone?

I’m not rushing out to buy one of those gadgets that stick in your ear so it looks like I’m talking to myself. Effective July 1, 2008 it will be illegal to talk on your cell phone the “old fashioned way” by holding the phone with your hand to your ear in the State of Washington: you will need to be “hands free” (hopefully your hands are on your steering wheel) when you are driving a car.

Possible future laws to make our roads safer could include the following for drivers:

  • no eating or drinking.
  • no primping (shaving, applying make-up etc.).
  • no reading (it is already illegal to “text” while driving in Washington).
  • no deep conversations, daydreaming or yelling at the kids.

I’m sitting on the fence with getting a new phone.  I’m real unhappy with my Treo 650 and I’m eyeballing the new iPhone.   I’ll figure out if I’m going to wire the car with a speaker or just use the speaker phone that I all ready have with the phone.   I don’t like to have things in my ears and I’m just not a fan of trying to tell if someone is “on” or not so I can’t see myself having a wireless ear phone.

Lending Integrity Seal of Approval

I recently received permission from NAMB to post the Lending Integrity Seal of Approval which you may have noticed on the left side of my blog.   This logo isn’t something that just anyone can post or promote, it must be approved by the National Association of Mortgage Brokers.

In order to display the Lending Integrity Seal of Approval, a broker or loan originator must:

George Hanzimanolis, President of NAMB feels this seal will “soon become to the mortgage industry what the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval is to the makers of consumer products.”

George, by the way, is a heck of nice guy.  My husband and I had the opportunity to meet and have dinner with him last week when he was in town with my brother-in-law, John Porter, Vice President of Mortgage Master Service Corporation.

 

So You’ve Just Become a Home Owner…Feeling Popular?

You will soon feel quite popular if you’ve just bought a home or at least your mail box will be with tons of junk mail.  Over the weekend I received an email from one of my clients who closed on their new home last month:

“As I’m sure is typical, we’re being deluged with mortgage junk mail.  I see you have several highlights of particularly bad ones you’ve seen, but is there any way to stop the flood?  I know there’s a marker you can put on your credit report that stops credit card offers – is there anything similar for mortgages?”

Happy 80th Birthday, JP Patches!

How perfect that not only is it Good People Day, that it also JP Patches 80th birthday.  If you’re a long time reader of Mortgage Porter, you know I’m a Patches Pal who has watched him since I was a tyke.

Today’s article in the Seattle PI also announced that the Statue will be complete and unveiled in Fremont on August 17, 2008!  Donations are still needed and JP’s handsome mug will remain on my blog (right side of the page) until the fundraising is complete.

It looks like the statue has changed from what was previously unveiled…I wonder if it JP Patches and Gertude statue was the finger issue?  During the unveiling at Fremont last year, the statue featured waving hands of the duo and someone (can’t remember if it was JP, Gertrude or from the crowd) said…”wonder how long until someone breaks off the fingers leaving just one?”

Not a Friend to this Family: Part 1

When I helped Micheal and Pam with the financing of their home almost five years ago, it was a challenging transaction.  They were excellent borrowers, except for the particular type of Visa he had (they’re Canadian).   Long story short, we wound up doing a 5/1 ARM through Woo Whoo Bank as they were only planning on staying here for about 5 years.  About four months ago, Micheal met with me to review his Note and to see about refinancing.  They may be staying a few years longer if they have their choice…Michael is having a challenge extending his Visa.  Michael wanted to refinance and was concerned about his ARM adjusting.  With our current mortgage climate and his current situation with his Visa, I could not refinance him.   We reviewed how his ARM and discussed how it functions and at that time, I told him that he has time–he did not to refinance yet.  He was still feeling pressured to do something–letting his ARM adjust was not sinking in.  He went directly to Woo Whoo to investigate a refinance.  Michael forwarded me the first good faith estimate from Big Bank.  The rate seemed too high to me; especially compared to his current mortgage.   I again encouraged him to wait out a few more months to see what rates do and that by that time,he would have more information on the status of his Visa.  Fast forward to the present.
